our first group excursion was a trip to robert castillo's farm in the south valley. laurel and scott gave me the OK to bring my three kids, which i am very grateful for becuase they, my kids, had a wonderful time. they got to pet his horse, rosabella, throw pebbles into the acequia, and pick chile peppers. for them it was an opportunity to run around and get a little dirty. for me, it was a chance to be around alfalfa, trees, running water, and fresh air. the south valley made me homesick for west texas. but i digress. my favorite part about our trip to robert's farm was him talking about the acequia, water rights, the flooding of his field, and how, on hot summer days, he grabs a tube and floats down the nicely moving waterway.
learning more about new mexico culture and how new mexican ranchers/farmers are so conscious about their land, about water, and about the interdependence of it all is enlightening and inspiring.
here are some pictures:

and here is a video of my baby, eric jr., indiscriminately picking chiles. although we were only supposed to be harvesting the red ones, baby eric picked whatever he could get his 2 year olds hands on!
